After long enough time has passed, self-isolating leads us all to try some pretty weird stuff. As the world continues to isolate at home, the biggest celebrities are also stuck within four walls, and even though those are usually the walls of a mansion, they too seem to slowly but surely lose their mind. And when hair salons are closed and personal contact is limited, many of them resort to do beauty experiments, or just embrace their natural looks (and locks). Here are the best and worst celeb quarantine makeovers - or in most cases, makeunders - as shared on social media.
1. Sarah Michelle Gellar
The Buffy star swapped her signature blonde locks with quarantine-pink hair, which shade she described as "rosé all day".
"Well, because we're still in quarantine, I had to think of a new and creative way to embarrass my children. Quaran-color!", she said on a video posted to her Instagram page.
2. Hilarie Burton
"The 'silver lining' is literally growing out of my skull,", the One Tree Hill star captioned her Instagram selfie.
"For all of our frontline and essential workers who are too busy to fuss with things like hair color, I grow mine out in solidarity with you. When I see it, I’m reminded of all you’re doing to keep us safe".
3. Eva Mendes
The beautiful actress shared a selfie with her face covered in colorful makeup, with the caption "they've won" - referring to her and actor Ryan Gosling daughters, Esmeralda and Amada, who were behind the look.
“Love this,” fellow actress Salma Hayek replied in the comments.
4. Chris Noth
Noth, aka Mr. Big from Sex and the City, revealed his new shaved look on Instagram, where he looked like a different person.
"I decided dealing with hair was superfluous during these times of quarantine," Noth captioned the selfie. Though he shaved his head, Noth did leave his goatee intact.
5. Luke Evans
The actor and his boyfriend, art director Rafa Olarra, shared a rare loved-up photo, that also revealed a quarantine makeover: they both dyed their hair fiery red.
“Today I will be channelling Sir Woody of the woodpeckers", the Beauty and the Beast star wrote on Instagram.
6. Gabrielle Union
In a series of Instagram posts, the Bring It On showed the progress she's made in growing out her natural hair.
Union, who for a long time has been wearing mainly box braids, decided to use the quarantine period to grow out her curls, and let her "natural locks appreciate the lockdown."
7. Prince Frederik of Denmark
Even the royals face some quarantine troubles: Danish Crown Prince, Prince Frederik, posted before-and-after photos of himself, showing his scruffy quaratine hair, and the haircut he got just after Danish hairdressers went back to business in April.
“I am probably not the only one who has been to a hairdresser today,” he captioned the post.
8. James Middleton
James Middleton, Kate Middleton's younger brother, decided that quarantine is the best time for a transformation, and shaved his beard for the first time in seven years.
He then went on a revealed the new look to his fiancée Alizee Thevenet, in a sweet Instagram video. "It's so weird!", gushes the bride-to-be.
9. Taraji P. Henson.
The Empire star showed off her freshly dyed, fiery red hair and curls - a look achieved by none other than herself.
"COVID 19 got me doing my own glam from head to toe!!! If this acting thing don’t work out I have another plan!", she captioned her photo.
10. Bella Hadid
The supermodel went on Instagram to let fans know that she had given herself new bangs - and revealed quite an impressive, professional-looking cut.
The cut was done with the help of Hadid's long-time hairstylist, Jen Atkin, who talked her through the process via FaceTime. Hadid finished her video with a poll: “Would you let me cut your bangs. Be honest”.
11. Colton Underwood
The Bachelor ex-couple, Colton Underwood and Cassie Randolph went on a quarantine hair experiment.
“I let @cassierandolph cut my hair...safe to say she won this battle and I will be wearing a hat for a while”, Underwood captioned the post, which then revealed quite a crazy grandpa haircut.
12. Sarah Hyland
The Modern Family star also decided to give self-dyeing a go, and colored her natural brown hair in a red shade. She captioned her photo with a mermaid emoji, and used the hashtag #QuaranTINT.
On a later Instagram story Hyland admitted that the ultimate result was supposed to be pink and not red, but assured fans that the color is temporary.
13. Armie Hammer
The handsome actor posted a mirror selfie that revealed a shaved mohawk and handlebar mustache - quite a change from Hammer's usual well-groomed style.
"Killing the game," the Call Me by Your Name star captioned the photo, which shocked fans.
14. Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham
The cute Bachelor couple debuted their quarantine hair transformations on Instagram, reporting that they used their daughter's nap time to color each other's hair.
“Alessi was napping sooo we did a thing + dyed each others hair lol now @ariejr’s really a silver fox", wrote Burnham.
15. Hilary Duff
The Younger star posted a selfie revealing a new, blue hair color and a shorter bob cut, which she captioned "yea" with a shrugging emoji.
Singer Matthew Koma, Duff's husband, later posted a live video of the two, and there he said he was the one who dyed Duff's hair.
16. Jim Carrey
In late March, the actor took to Twitter to announce that he's growing a beard during quarantine - and documenting it on social media.
On day 49 on the experiment the comedian posted a bearded photo of himself and wrote: "Rate of facial hair growth: Normal. I’d like to thank my mom Kathleen for giving me just enough human DNA to blend in".
17. Tallulah Willis
Tallulah, the youngest daughter of actors Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, shared a video of her dad carefully giving her a buzz cut, while older sister Rumer is encouraging them.
Many fans were reminded of one of mom Demi Moore's more iconic looks: her shaved head for the movie G.I. Jane.
18. Anderson Cooper
Another victim of quarantine DIY-haircut is the CNN anchor, who revealed on air that he had given himself an unsuccessful buzz.
"Last night I took a razor and buzzed my head and gave myself a bald spot," Cooper told viewers, grinning. "'I thought it was a grade 7 but it was a 5 and I've been walking around all day with my hand over my head. It's fine if I'm looking at the camera straight-on, but as soon as a turn my head, it all gives it away."
19. Jennifer Carpenter
The Dexter star resorted to coloring her hair at home - with some help from her hairstylist, Jacob Rozenberg, via FaceTime.
"Who knew covering 'silvers' could be so much fun! Thank you Jacob (AKA coach) for being so patient! And we have #silvers ladies... not greys 😉 gotta remember to pay myself! Haha", she wrote on her Instagram post.
20. Pink
"When I get drunk, I get really, really brilliant ideas," the singer said in a video she posted on Instagram. "Last night, I got an idea - I can cut hair. I can totally cut hair. Why have I been paying these people this whole time?"
Pink revealed the - somewhat uneven - cut and seemed very pleased with the result, though she added she might fix it later.
21. Mark Wahlberg
The actor got a manicure and a 'full makeup', courtesy of his 10-year-old daughter, Grace.
"Okay, so, 15 days into quarantine now. I'm getting pedicures and manicures—and apparently a full makeup", Wahlberg said on a video posted to Instagram. "She's got her whole kit there. Um, yeah, this is what's happening now…"
22. Ali Wong
Comedian Ali Wong shared a very relatable selfie on Instagram, joking: "My hair: 'I miss shampoo and water.' Me: 'Tomorrow, I promise.' My hair: 'You've been saying that everyday for the past 10 days.'"
She later added another selfie with the same messy do, and wrote :"I’VE GOT EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL".
23. Sarah Silverman
The comedian took to Instagram to show off the gray hairs that have been growing out during quarantine.
"The days are manic. from weeping to dancing to worrying about sick friends to sobbing to playing call of duty and talking shit to the screen like an a--hole," she wrote in the caption. "Good or bad the greys are on point."
24. Jonathan Van Ness
Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness, who's known for his groomed look and signature beard, also decided quarantine is the time for some facial-hair transformation and went on to shave his beard.
"I look like Weird Al with this no facial hair...", he captioned his beard-free photo. "He’s hot."
25. Kalie Shorr
The country singer revealed her hair color transformation and wrote: "I dyed my hair purple today, hows ur quarantine breakdown going".
In late March 2020, Shorr revealed that she was diagnosed with Covid-19 despite being quarantined "except for supermarket trips". "I'm feeling significantly better, but it's proof how dangerous and contagious this is," she shared on Twitter.
26. Riz Ahmed
The British actor and rapper posted two photos of himself with a new DIY buzz cut, which "got out of hand".
“Anyone else do a #Stayhome haircut that got outta hand? Least now it feels like there’s someone else here when I look in the mirror".
27. Anna Camp
The Pitch Perfect star switched her normally blonde-dyed locks to a red-pink shade which she called "fruit punch".
Camp, another of the many celebrities who announced they've tested positive for Covid-19, said she contracted it after not wearing a mask in public "one time".
28. Ruby Rose
The Orange is the New Black star debuted a new colorful do on Instagram: a shaved head, colored half blue and half pink, and which she also accessorized with two butterfly clips.
"What can I say!? Sometimes you just need to feel blue and other times you need pink to lighten your day.", she captioned the photos.
29. Katy Perry
The singer and American Idol judge posted a slideshow showing a picture of herself from an Idol taping in Hawaii, next to a makeup-free selfie from her home.
“Pre-quarantine → mid-quarantine,” she captioned the photos, and later added in the comments: “Blackheads and all baby.”
30. Ariel Winter
The Modern Family star posted two bare face selfies, and wrote: "Kindness is not that hard!!!!!" [referring to the word 'kindness' on her sweatshirt] "Also...quarantine is bringing out my freckles?!????"
Fans loved the make-up free look, in addition to Winter's new platinum blonde hair color, a dramatic shift from her usual dark hair.
31. Tamera Mowry
The actress joined the gray train, and posted a lovely selfie revealing her outgrown gray hairs, with her hair pulled back, and bare face.
“Hello grays. No getting my hair done during #socialdistancing, and I’m okay with it!”, she captioned the photo.
32. Kelly Ripa
The Morning Show star took to her Instagram story to start a 'root watch', documenting her gray hairs growing out.
In a video, Rippa's husband Mark Consuelos confessed that he's all about the natural look: 'I gotta tell you, I see you in the morning and I think it looks beautiful. I like it. I'm looking forward to when it's just completely gray."
33. Jennifer Love Hewitt
The actress took a break from her signature brunette look and switched it up for some temporary hot pink color - and she seemed to love the result.
"The smile of a girl who just did at home hot pink highlights because what else can I do right now!" she captioned her selfie.
34. DJ Khaled
The rapper and producer responded to fans who noticed his much scruffier than usual look on his Instagram photos, and posted a side-by-side comparison of his normal tidy beard and his out-of-control quarantine fuzz.
“THEY DONT WANT ME TO GET A HAIRCUT SMH! I will get a haircut I will figure it out soon lol. Quarantine alert", he captioned the funny post.
35. Ricky Martin
Martin was one of the first celebrities to join the pink trend when he showed it off in the middle of March when he posting a live Instagram video about the importance of social distancing.
The singer has since shaved his head and is currently sporting a hunky quarantine buzz cut.
36. Kevin Hart
The actor and comedian uploaded an Instagram selfie story, talking about his natural gray out growing out in quarantine.
"I ain’t never not been working for this long, so I ain’t never had a chance to let it grow like this," he says on the video. "I’m not gonna lie to y’all, I’m kind of rolling with the grey hair, I’m feeling it."
37. Dua Lipa
The singer, known for her versatile style, is naturally one of the celebrities who are experimenting with hair color changes during quarantine.
Lipa shared a selfie video of her, her boyfriend Anwar Hadid - and her new orange bangs, which she captioned "orangina quarantina".
38. Blake Shelton
Blake Shelton and girlfriend Gwen Stefani appeared on a home-version of The Tonight Show, and while host Jimmy Fallon was asking them questions, Stefani was seen giving Shelton a mullet.
"You would never do this in real life," Fallon said. "Dude, you are so Tiger King right now. You have no idea."
39. Helen Mirren
The renowned actress shared a makeup-free selfie of herself, taken in bed - and it was for a good cause.
"in return for this pic of me literally first thing in the morning, please donate to the intensive care support..." where she added a link to the donation page for British Intensive Care Society.
40. Will Smith
The actor had a funny response to fans who were surprised to see, on his Instagram photos, that he was letting his grey beard grow during quarantine.
"Y’all talking about my beard. And I don’t know why y’all acting surprised. I’ve been rocking a beard forever,” Smith joked, and uploaded a video featuring a CGI version of his Beard on some of his most famous characters.
41. Elle Fanning
The Great actress used her time in quarantine to dye her signature bright blonde hair a shade of peachy-pink, and posted a mirror selfie that seemed to show her just-dyed hair.
Later Instagram uploads show Fanning back to her natural blonde look, so it looks like the pink experiment might have been just a temporary one.
42. Paulina Porizkova
The stunning 55-year-old model took to Instagram to post a photo of her dark roots growing out, and shared that she discovered she has much less gray hair than she expected.
"Not so beautiful: quarantine hair color. Haha," she wrote. "The surprise here is that in much less grey than I thought, which sort of bums me out - I wanted to go gloriously grey[...] Looks like I’m going right back to brown."
