Your wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, but the mixture of stress, alcohol, and too-great expectations can often lead to some awesome wedding fails instead. From drunk guests, to unruly children, to white-wearing mother of brides (yes, it's now a thing), check out these funny photos that capture the best (or maybe, worst?) wedding fails - that happened to real couples.
1. Who Wore It Better?
When comedian Jimmy Fallon asked Twitter users to share their worst #weddingfails, Amy Pennza's post was the definite winner. It read: "My mother-in-law wore a wedding dress to my wedding. So, yeah, top that one, Twitter."
"...To know my mother-in-law is to know that there is zero malice in her heart—the woman just can't resist a sale (and the dress was significantly marked down)", Pennza later told Glamour after the photo went viral.
2. The Bridal Buddy
While most brides choose to go for a lacy garter or a pair of cheeky underwear under their wedding dress, one bride has stunned the internet after she proudly revealed she was wearing a teddy bear nappy under her dress.
At least she saved her maids of honor the hassle of being cramped in the toilet, helping their friend struggle out of her dress.
3. Tooth Fairy Wedding
Wedding fails spare no one - not even celebrities. Actress Hillary Duff's 2010 wedding may have looked like a fairy tale, but it turns out the Younger star went through quite a trauma on when she broke her tooth on a bagel.
"You know how you starve yourself before your wedding," Duff recalled on Chelsea Lately. "Well, I was like, I'm going to eat a bagel first thing, I'm getting married in the evening but I have been so good it's not going to stick between [now and the wedding]. So I'm just chowing down on a bagel, a nice soft bagel and I spit my tooth out in my hand." Luckily, Duff's wedding planner was able to connect her to an emergency dentist, and she was ready to get married in the evening.
4. Wedding Day Flare-Up
And here's yet anohter celebrity victim: the singer (and Queen B's sister) Solange Knowles suffered an outbreak of hives during her wedding day to music video director Alan Ferguson, which took place in New Orleans.
Knowles tweeted a "thank you" to antihistamine medication, Benadryl, after the wedding, and blamed the hot Louisiana weather on her flare-up: "Last but not least....:) Shout out to Benadryl yo, lol. NOTHING was gonna stop me from having my mother and son dance with Julez.”
5. Look of Terror
"I thought I was making a calm, composed face as my wife came down the aisle. I found out this was the face I made", Patrick Neville wrote on Twitter, sharing this hilarious photo.
We kind of wish that we also had a picture of his bride - one can only wonder what face she was making back at him.
6. Wedding Cake Disaster
This amazing photo caught the exact moment in which English newlyweds Chloe and Aaron Bailey watched in horror as their $550 wedding cake came crashing down, when they had just started cutting it.
"For us, it felt like slow motion, as if it were about five or 10 minutes", Chloe told The Sun. "We were both just gripping on to the edge of the table thinking, 'No, this can't be happening.’”
7. Bee in His Bonnet
This photo was taken by a professional wedding photographer who captured this amazing image: "One time I was filming a wedding for work - and the groom slapped the bride in the middle of their vows..."
Luckily, there's cotexts: in the full video, the amused priest explains: 'There was a Bee'.
8. Near Death Experience
Newlyweds Cheyenne and Lucas Kopeschka were sitting on a park bench during a post-wedding ceremony interview, when a massive branch suddenly snapped.
Luckily, they managed to get away just as it came plummeting down right where they had been sitting, and the whole thing was caught on their wedding video. "Our love is forever going to be stronger than that tree," said Cheyenne.
9. Swept by Love
People will go far to get their perfect wedding picture, as sometimes too far - just like this pair of newlyweds learned the hard way:
"Trying to get that perfect romantic shot of us both in a boat after saying 'I Do'", was the caption of this funny accidents.
10. Deerly Beloved
Morgan and Luke Mackley were taking some wedding pictures at a nearby field, when all of a sudden an announced guest arrived at the scene, hungry for a piece of Morgan's bouquet.
"We thought it was hilarious," Morgan told ABC News. "We really didn't feel scared at all. Maybe we were riding on that post -wedding high?"
11. Dude Where's My Rings?
Twitter user Evelyn shared a hilarious and pretty mortifying moment, which was perfectly captured in this picture: "I was the maid of honor at my sister's wedding. Everything was going somewhat according to plan, and while I was trying to enjoy the moment, I realized I had forgotten the rings in the women's dressing room. Here's me trying to telepathically tell my parents."
Fingers crossed that the bride and groom were able to complete the ceremony.
12. Second Time's a Charm
"I was the best man at my friend's second wedding. I started my speech with 'welcome back everyone' - he was not happy", shared this funny Twitter user.
Did the groom regret choosing him as best man? Possibly. We love everybody's expressions on this photo, we just hope the bride was also smiling.
13. That's One Way to Do Confetti
When Cristina and Marcos got married in a small town in Spain, they chose to skip the tradition of guests throwing rice at them, and instead went for a harvester throwing confetti and corn at the wedding party.
As they exited the church, the harvester started blasting them with hundreds of kilos of 'confetti', and a viral video shows the guests trying to escape the machine.
14. Oh No He Didn't
The source of this photo may be unclear, but was is depicted in it is every bride's nightmare: someone stepping on their train when they're walking down the aisle.
And to this unfortunate bride we want to say: we feel you lady.
15. Runaway Groom
"At a friend's wedding reception it was very windy and the groom got blown off the cake and well it looked like he had jumped off and run away and she’s waving bye Felicia!".
If the first cutting of the wedding cake symbolizes the bride and groom's first task together as a married couple, we guess this bride is on her own.
16. Hanging High
The garter toss is one way to rally all of the men to the dance floor, but turns out, it's also a way to leave them... hanging?
"So during the garter toss, the groom threw it in this chandelier," wrote one Twitter user. "I decided I wanted it bad enough I had buddies hoist me up, then all went south fast as I started swinging from it... It ended up falling out and nobody told me so, I kept swinging around for 5 minutes"
17. Bride Down
Sometimes it's best to avoid traditions. "Tried to be romantic and carry my wife out of the ceremony. Luckily, this was after she said 'I do'", wrote Patman on Twitter.
Muddy aisle + ambitious groom + white wedding dress = not the best combination.
18. Triple Lace
Here's a sweet one: Twitter user Alex Campisi shared a photo from her wedding day, and wrote "All three of the grandmothers unexpectedly showed up to the wedding in the exact same dress!!".
The three grandmas happened to all go for the same blue lace piece, and took the funny coincidence with the smile.
19. Iron Ire
This anonymous groom has been accused on Facebook of 'ruining' his wedding photos with his creased pants and mismatching shoes.
"I love the bride's dress and she seems so excited. Which is awesome," wrote one user on the 'wedding shaming' group. "She deserves photos with his pants not looking fresh out of a trash bag." Note to self: pack a travel iron and some shoe polish in the wedding overnight bag.
20. You May Now Kiss Your Dianosaur
"Not a #WeddingFail but definitely a #WeddingSuccess when the groom turned around and instead of seeing his bride he saw me in a dinosaur costume", write Kate Anne Rose on Twitter.
Dinosaur bride? Definitely a wedding success in our books (and the groom also seems pretty happy).
21. The Forgotten Manicure
OK, so this is not exactly a wedding photo, but it's so shocking that we had to include it. The bride-to-be posted this photo of her new engagement ring to social media, and it soon made its way to the "You Said Yes But Your Finger Said No" Facebook group.
Group members were mortified by the ring's fit, and more than that - by the woman's dirty fingernails. "I feel bad for her fingers. But the nails are giving me anxiety", wrote one.
22. Wedding Nap Time
For the bride and groom tying the knot, their wedding day is one of the most exciting days in their lives. However, for others, it's just another day at the 'office'. Take for example this guy, catching up on some sleep before the ceremony:
"The priest at my wedding fell asleep during mass and then proceed to say the wrong name for my wife during our vows", wrote Ray Malaspina who shared this funny photo.
23. Horse-Drawn Fiasco
Many couples like to go all out on their wedding day, opting for things like a horse- drawn carriage. But the romantic choice is sometimes the dangerous choice:
"This was my cousin's wedding fail. They both fell off my cousin had a black eye, broken wrist and I think a broken rib... her husband had a concussion. This was right after the ceremony. We had them dance and eat Cake before the Ambulance got there.", wrote the Twitter user who shared this photo.
24. Saved by the Dress
Twitter user Julie Davies shared this horror story/photo: "Our photographer made us come out early so guests didn’t have to wait. I stepped on the front of my dress the steps from the bottom.
My new husband Tim held onto me until we reached the bottom. He spiraled into the crowd and ripped his pants. My dress was in perfect shape." Silver linings!
25. Need a Ride?
"Our driver thought it would be nice to drop our guests onto the beach for our ceremony and of course got stuck. I can laugh now but I didn’t then."
It sure makes for some interesting wedding pictures, but we do hope that all guests managed to make it back after the ceremony
26. The 'Where's Waldo' of Brides
What will be the end with the white wearing mothers in law? Here is another example:
"This photo features me and my husband’s entire family. Can you guess which one is the bride? It’s like the “where’s Waldo” of brides. Yes, my mother in law wore a wedding dress to my wedding."
27. The Wedding Crasher
This couple was photobombed - by a car crash: "Josh and Madeline Tattersall wanted dust, sure enough, the groomsmen did what groomsmen do best - help find a way to make it happen!".
Their friend lost control when trying to add some golden dust to the photoshoot, and tipped the buggy over - and created some completely different, yet awesome, wedding pictures.
28. Oklahoma Knows How to Party
This woman went to get married and learned that she and her guests can also get drug tested while they're there, lucky! "Thank you, Oklahoma County Courthouse. Your take on efficiency will always be a precious wedding memory."
In any case, our recommendation is not to get married under the influence.
29. A Night to (Probably Not) Remember
Weddings and open bar, always a dangerous combo - especially if you're the one getting married.
"My husband is not a drinker, but decided to do vodka shots with everyone that he could talk into it. This is how the reception ended for him, followed up with needing to be brought up to the hotel room on a luggage cart".
30. Jesus Was Here
When Annie Howington married her husband Ben, a creative photographer took some creative freedom and photoshopped Jesus Christ into their wedding photo.
"We got our proofs back to choose which ones we wanted for our wedding album, and there he was - the ultimate photobomb," Howington told The Mirror.
31. Black Eye, White Wedding
"My son (then 8, now 24) was giving me away. He played hockey the morning of the wedding, got hit in the eye with the ball.. huge black eye! Was the talk of the wedding lol".
Definitely a cringe-worthy story, but an adorable picture nonetheless. For future black-eyed wedding goers, we advise trying on some concealer.
32. The Uninvited Guest
"As we're down in Zihuatanejo celebrating our 7th anniversary today..." wrote Sam Alhadeff on Twitter, "it brings me back to the day a random Mexican beach dog thought it would be ok to relieve himself on our chuppah!".
Seven successful years of marriage? Hey, maybe the random dog actually blessed the wedding.
33. A Tale of Two Wedding Dresses
Most people know that the number one rule of being a wedding guest, is not to wear white to the wedding. But this woman apparently didn't get the memo, and wore a floor-length white dress to friend’s wedding - and even took a confusing picture with the newlyweds.
The photos went viral on a Facebook 'wedding shaming' group, where users wondered which one of the women is the actual bride. "It’s one thing to show up in white. It’s a whole other thing to show up in a wedding dress", wrote one.
34. Which Way to the Pool?
"My sister got married at a resort in Spain that also specializes in spa treatments for senior citizens. Partially nude old people kept wandering into the ceremony."
We guess this guy also didn't get the memo about not wearing white to a wedding.
35. A Deep Dip
Beautiful wedding day, happy couple, everything was ready for a romantic 'dip kiss' by the church's door... Only sometimes, they're harder than they look.
"He swept me off my feet (kind of)", reads the bride's caption, who also added a smiley wink.
36. Every Wedding Needs a Drama Queen
"We stopped to pray a solemn prayer and our flower girl took the invitation very seriously, throwing herself flat out on the ground and proceeded to wiggle around during the event. (Still one of our favorite and funniest memories of that day!)".
How can we book this flower girl for other events? We love her attitude.
37. Guys I'm Also a Part of This Relationship!
'Babies and dogs, always steal the show' - and this sweet wedding moment is no exception:
"Sometimes unexpected things happen during weddings... like your dog needing to be carried away cause he wants to be in the ceremony so bad!!"
38. High on Love
"This is me on the right...", shared this funny Twitter user, "jumping with such enthusiasm that I broke my flowers and the daisy heads rained down on me like a botanical Game of Thrones."
We'd go for an enthusiastic bridesmaid over a too-chill one any day.
39. Face, Meet Grass
"At my sister's wedding the photographer wanted us to 'race to the beer' for a cute pic, well...
Short story I forgot I was wearing a dress & face planted the ground & cut my lip with my tooth, no stitches but I ended up with half my face swelled & a fat lip". Ouch!
40. It's Like Rain on Your Wedding Day
"We got married on aug 7th which is traditionally the hottest week if the year in Seattle. Its poured all day. The wedding was outside. My guests were really good sports but the sun only came out after they left."
To be honest, we feel cold just looking at this picture, so good on everyone for keeping a smile on! And remember, rain on your wedding day is actually considered good luck.
41. King of the Dance Floor
Twitter user Jeff Grass shared this awesome photo and wrote: "I danced so hard I ripped my pants...".
Ripped pants from too much dancing? a) there's no such thing as too much dancing, and b) This is a wedding win in our books!
42. Up in Flames
"The whole bridal party was lined up outside in the bar area outside of the reception room for the grand entrance. Groomsman calmly says 'hey, that thing's on fire' as a fake centerpiece goes up in flames. Best man smothers flame and we dance out to 'Good Night'.
You can see just how close the candle was to the centerpiece in this photo here... Sadly, we have no post-char photos."
43. OK Feet, Focus!
This guy was photographed dancing at a wedding - with a very somber thing. But his post makes it so much better:
"A friend of mine [took a picture of us] dancing together and we both looked like we were miserable. Despite the looks on our faces, we had a great time."
44. Get This Bride a Burger
"I got hungry before my wedding. RIGHT before my wedding", wrote Emily Tickle Thomas who shared this cute picture on Twitter.
We think that getting married on a full stomach actually sounds a lot more fun than the usual wedding-day diet.
