Pop music is, by the very origin of its name and the word, is usually quite popular. Whether or not it is popular for good reasons or for bad, however, is a different point entirely. Sometimes music is popular for a short time because the tunes are so catchy, but once you hear them often enough, you want to just rip your ears off. Some songs are classics that can be replayed endlessly. The songs on this list are all very well-known songs that some people love, and some people hate. But one thing that can be agreed upon is that they are downright annoying at times. Either they are played too often, or two or three plays are more than enough, but here is the list of pop music's most aggravating and grating songs, ranked in order. Can you guess which one made it to #1?
#40 - Barry Manilow - Copacabana
Barry Manilow really created a hit when we came out with Copacabana in 1978. People all around the world were dancing to the catchy tune and interesting lyrics. Copacabana was really put on the map after this song, thanks to the fame of it. However, when you listen to the song a few times you can see how it would also be on the more annoying side of songs and hard to listen to.
As you'll see, most of the songs on the list are on the list due to the fact that they are all quite repetitive and that is one of the things that puts a song high on the list of annoyance.
#39 - Andy Grammer - Honey, I'm Good
Starting off the list of most annoying pop songs you have Andy Grammer with his hit called "Honey, I'm Good". The song talks about a guy who is out at a bar and a woman hits on him. He tells her that he is not interested because he is only interested in his wife and therefore should go home to her soon. The catchy tune makes it very easy to sing along to.
However, there is something a bit strange about the fact that he talks about how great she looks, but commends himself for resisting. The combination is a bit off putting.
#38 - Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight
The 70s were famous for their music for so many reasons. There were countless hits that came out of this memorable decade. One of the more famous and also one of the more annoying hits to emerge from the 70s was called Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band. The folksy and "down on the range" vibe that the song gives off is perhaps what makes it on the list of most annoying pop songs.
People who grew up in the 70s probably have very fond memories of this song and would love to listen over and over again, but people from other decades are skeptical.
#37 - Crazy Frog - Axel F
Right from the start of this song you can understand how it would be put on the list of aggravating songs. It definetly has a certain appeal to it as well that makes people from all around the world love it and want to listen to it to dance and at parties. However, the sounds, especially their repetitiveness are also extremely annoying even on the first time that you listen to the song.
Usually you have to listen to a song a few times before you become really annoyed with it, however, Axel F by Crazy Frog made an exception where it is annoying even upon first listen.
#36 - James Blunt - You're Beautiful
Although James Blunt certainly has plenty of great hits and the song You're Beautiful is among them, it is also one of the more annoying of his songs. The chorus, where he repeats the words "You're Beautiful" make it top of the list of his most annoying songs. The combination of his voice and the particular note of the song makes it so that it is hard to listen to more than once.
The lyrics are also a bit on the cheesy side, which makes it an even less likable song at the end of the day.
#35 - Ricky Martin - Livin' La Vida Loca
Just because this song is extremely popular, especially at parties, doesn't mean that it isn't also annoying. A song can be both annoying and a classic at the same time and that is exactly what happened with this song by Ricky Martin. Livin' La Vida Loca is certainly a well known song that is beloved by many and can definitely get people dancing, especially after a few drinks, but it can also be annoying.
It has that certain aspect that makes a song appealing, that goes without saying due to the sheer popularity of it. But there is also a very annoying aspect to it.
#34 - Europe - Final Countdown
With a band name as vague as Europe, you might already be suspicious that it will be on the annoying side. And this song immediately delivers. The name alludes to the fact that the song is a bit on the serious side and themed in an intense manner. It is perhaps a bit too intense of a song to really be able to just enjoy it and sing along casually.
You can tell that the singer gets really into the song as well, as do all of the musicians. They take this song very seriously.
#33 - Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots - Disco Duck
Although it is still just the beginning of the list of the most annoying songs, you will certainly be able to agree easily that this song is meant to be on this list. After all, it is called Disco Duck, which should be a bit of a clue that the song has some annoying potential. Take into consideration that the song then includes countless duck noises throughout the music and song itself.
The duck voices and sounds are what make this song so annoying and strange to listen to. Without the strange noises maybe the song would be ok.
#32 - Hanson - MMMBop
When you first start listening to this song for the first time, it doesn't seem like it would be among the top most annoying pop songs in existence. After all, it starts out with nice words and nice themes that many people can relate to. However, it quickly turns into the chorus which is where some people find this song to be more on the annoying side of things.
You probably won't find this song that annoying if you only listen to it once or twice, however, once you start listening to it over and over you will never want to hear it again.
#31 - Eiffel 65 - Blue
The full name of this song is Blue (Da Ba Dee) and judging by the part of the title in parathesis it is easy to understand how this song would make it to this list of most annoying pop songs. They also used a bit of an effect on the singers' voices (or so it seems) which is partially what people love about the song, as it seems alien like, but it can also make it pretty annoying to listen to.
This song is also extremely long, which only adds to the potential it has to be a bit on the annoying side...as it doesn't seem to ever end.
#30 - Cher - Believe
Although this song is undoubtedly a classic, it can be a bit grating to the ears. There is something about the sounds and the effects that they put on the singers' voices combined with the tune. Despite that, however, it appears that there are still quite a few people who still love this song...both the words and the tune. It can be annoying and still loved at the same time!
Despite the fact that plenty of people find this classic a bit annoying, there are also plenty of people who still love it and will play it on repeat.
#29 - Tom Jones - What's New Pussycat
Right from the start of this song, you can realize that it is an annoying one. It's not like some of the other ones on the list where you have to listen for a bit and wait until you get to the chorus before realizing how aggravating the song can be. This one is bad right from the start and continues that way throughout the entire song. Even the words are annoying.
There is also a combination of singing and speaking in this song, making it even more confusing and unpleasant to the ears.
#28 - The Muppets - Mahna Mahna
The fact that this is a children's song makes you wonder if maybe this should be closer to the top of the list of most annoying songs. Children's songs are made to be repetitive and simple so that children can easily learn and memorize them. This song, Mahna Mahna by the Muppets, which isn't even really a word and has no other lyrics...really is in its own category of annoying song.
You feel a little bit of pity for all the parents of the world when you realize how many times they have to listen to this song on a daily basis.
#27 - The Strangeloves - I Want Candy
You can sort of get the hint when you hear the title of this song that it will probably be a slightly annoying one. After all, just about any song that is focused around candy is bound to be an annoying song. And that is exactly what this song delivered. It almost seems like it was written by a group of kids that wanted candy and so they created a song about it.
It's as if those kids were hoping that by writing and singing this song and performing it for their parents, that their parents would give in and buy them some candy.
#26 - Nickelback - Photograph
Maybe it is the fact that it is such a sentimental song, or perhaps it is just the fact that the tune is a bit annoying, but either way, Photograph by Nickelback is a loved and hated song. It is nice in many ways, however, it is also very annoying in other ways. After all, who wants to focus that much on the past and a specific photograph? It is a bit too sentimental.
There is nothing wrong with being a little sentimental, but you also don't want to become obsessive with it, which is what appears to have happened here.
#25 - Baha Men - Who Let the Dogs Out
If you have heard this song at least once in your life, there is probably no way you can ever hear this phrase without thinking of this song and singing it. It is somewhat brilliant when you see how they compared the lyrics with the words and the sound of barking. However, the combination also makes for one of the most annoying combinations that were ever put into song form.
The music video that goes along with this song is just about as annoying as the tune of this classic. They did a great job at creating an annoying hit.
#24 - Los Del Rio - Macarena
There is no arguing that the Macarena is one of the most well known songs on the planet. Just about everyone knows the dance that goes along with it as well. However, if you actually listen to the words of the song, it is quite sad as it is all about an unfaithful partner. It is strange to think that everyone is dancing so happily to this song as if it were also happy words.
Is there anyone who actually likes this song though? Or is it just because everyone knows it and it is famous so everyone can enjoy it and dance to it?
#23 - Justin Bieber - Baby
With singers like Justin Bieber and Ludacris performing in the same song, you would think that it would be less aggravating than this one is. However, beyond the somewhat cheesy tune and words, the repetitiveness is grating on the ears. You can only have a certain level of cheesy before it is just too much and the song is not enjoyable. Either you choose cheesy lyrics or a cheesy tune but not both.
He sings the word "baby" too many times for this to be enjoyable to listen to. It seems like the verse by Ludacris could not be more welcome.
#22 - The Four Seasons - Sherry
You might not think that this song would be so annoying, judging just by the name of it. Sherry seems like a pretty innocent and nice name for a song. However, when you listen to this song you will be shocked right from the beginning. And you will never hear the word or name Sherry the same. You won't be able to hear it in any other way than the loud and high pitched sounds of the song.
There is something super catchy about the tune, although it is an annoying one. But that is what makes for any popular but annoying song.
#21 - The Police - De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
With a song title as long and a strange as this one, it's hard not to think that it would make it on the list of most annoying songs. The Police came out with plenty of other great songs, however, this one is debatable, especially when it comes to the lyrics. Repetition can be a good thing, but in this case, it seems that they took it a little too far.
Although all that The Police want to say to you is "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", all you want them to do is stop or say something else.
#20 - Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
Here you have the rule...if the title of the song has the same word in it twice in a row, then you can almost guarantee that it will be an annoying song. Who hears the word "ice" at any given time through the day and is always tempted to just started singing this absurd song by Vanilla Ice? After all, this song is perhaps the most famous Hip Hip song of the 90s and maybe of all time.
Vanilla Ice really knew what they were doing and they clearly had some sort of obsession with ice that they had to sing about it and also name themselves after it.
#19 - The Black Eyed Peas - My Humps
It is no secret that one of the most annoying songs in existence is My Humps by The Black Eyes Peas. Although it is also one of those songs that you can't help but listen to and love deep down in your heart somewhere, it's hard to imagine that you were at one point listening to this song as a kid and singing along as if the lyrics weren't wildly inappropriate.
Everything about this song is a bit questionable, but one thing is also for sure, you can't listen to this more than once without having enough.
#18 - Starship - We Built This City
The minute you see that a song is almost five minutes long, you know that there is a risk that it will be an annoying one. The song We Built This City by Starship is no exception. The song itself doesn't seem that it will be that annoying or that bad until you hear the chorus (the same as the name). After listing to this song you never really want to hear the phrase "We built this city ever again".
After hearing this song all you can say to yourself is that you don't really care who built the city, you just want them to stop singing about it.
#17 - Willow Smith - I Whip My Hair
When you hear the song "I Whip My Hair" it is not only annoying and grating, but it is also a bit surprising and shocking that anyone heard this tune and read the lyrics to this song and paid for it to be produced. After all, the chorus sounds more like a siren than a chorus. It makes you wonder if this song ever would have been released if Willow Smith's father wasn't so famous.
This song is quite bad all alone, but when you see the music video that went along with it, you would be even more surprised and shocked that it was ever as popular as it was.
#16 - Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
There is no doubt that Celine Dion is one of the best singers to have ever graced this earth, however, this one song, which was one of her larger hits, was so overplayed it's almost difficult to listen to at this point. Granted, it is not really Celine's fault that this song was the theme of Titanic and that is partially why it is so overplayed and difficult to stop hearing.
However, no matter how good a song is in the beginning, it is hard to listen to it when it is so overdone and overplayed like this one.
#15 - Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
Billy Ray Cyrus is a legend in his own right, however, this song was not his best moment. There is something so embarrassing and cringe about it. It seems fun to dance to, which is more or less the real purpose of this song. However, there is something so lame about the phrase "achy breaky heart" that it was hard for non country music lovers to not make fun of this one.
It is a bit weird that Billy is referring to his heart as a "he" in this song. It adds to the already quite large cringe factor of this song.
#14 - Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
If you listen just to the beginning of this song then you might not understand why it is considered to be so annoying. However, as soon as you get to the chorus you can most definitely understand how it could be grating and aggravating. Especially in a time when it was popular, you probably heard the "Karma, Karma, Karma Karma, Karma, Karma chameleon" chorus everywhere you went and you couldn't escape it.
The song itself does have a nice combination of calming tunes and catchy ones. Perhaps that it why it was so popular in the first place, although it quickly became annoying.
#13 - Rebecca Black - Friday
Right from the beginning, the song Friday by Rebecca Black received some controversial views and conflicting opinions. It was released in 2011 and it almost immediately received countless negative comments and reviews from viewers on YouTube. Some of them thought the song was too basic or cheesy. They did have something to their claims as the song is pretty grating and almost seems like something you should only listen to in high school.
It seemed though that the phrase all publicity is good publicity was the case with this as the song became popular despite it all. Some people liked the basic simplicity of the song.
#12 - Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
In case you haven't noticed, there appears to be quite a theme going on in this list. Most songs have something partially repetitive in the chorus. In the case of Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by WHAM! you can already have a guess why this one is included on the list. Just like many of the other songs, it does have a certain charm about it, which caused it to become popular in the first place.
It only takes a few too many listens of a song for it to become something that you love to listen to and a song you love to one that makes you want to pull your hair out.
#11 - Spice Girls - Wannabe
Although this song is technically called Wannabe, most people would recognize it much faster if you just said "Tell me what you want". You know a song is catchy when you can say just a few lines of the lyrics and everyone would immediately know what song you are referring to and would be able to sing along to it. That is exactly the case with Wannabe by Spice Girls.
This song is without a doubt a hit, selling over 23 million copies across the world. That is very impressive, despite the slightly annoying nature of it.
#10 - Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe
What happens when you take a traditional folk song and somehow also turn it into a somewhat pop music song? You get one of the most annoying songs ever to exist. Although the Cotton Eye Joe can be very fun to put on at certain parties, especially when you see everyone getting up and dancing along to it, it also is a very annoying song that cannot be listened to very often.
Everything about this song is annoying. It does have some redeeming qualities such as the dancing capabilities, but that is all it has going for it.
#9 - OMI - Cheerleader
Although the first time that you listen to this song you might not even think to add it to the list of most annoying songs, after a few more times of listening you will probably change your mind. The song itself is cute and fun to dance to, but it doesn't have the bet long term listening potential. If you don't want to be too annoyed by it then only listen a few times!
It's not immediately clear exactly what makes this song annoying or somewhat difficult to listen to, however, once you realize it, it cannot be undone.
#8 - The Coasters - Yakety Yak
You can almost guess just by the title of this one that it would be an annoying song to some extent. The lyrics are about a little boy who doesn't want to do his chores and it does have a catchy tune in the beginning. However, the shouting of the words "yakety yak" throughout the song makes it feel a little bit too folksy and a bit too aggressive overall.
It doesn't help that the song itself is also quite repetitive. Maybe if the tune was a bit more diverse throughout the song it would be more enjoyable to listen to.
#7 - The Champs - Tequila
It's funny that a song that only has one word in the entirety of it can become so popular. You wouldn't expect it and yet that is exactly what happened with The Champs and their song entitled Tequila. It does feature a long and dominant instrumental section that features the word "tequila" occasionally throughout. But there is something about the seeming randomness of the word tequila that makes it hard to appreciate.
Even though it is an annoying song, it still happens to be an extremely popular song that even reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Maybe it's just because people love tequila.
#6 - Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines
Number six on the list is included partially because the song itself is incredibly annoying, but also because the lyrics and innuendos are quite repulsive as well. Robin Thicke rightfully got quite a bit of backlash when he released this song and people started to hear and understand the words of it. It's no wonder that it is considered one of the most annoying songs of all time as well.
A judge also ruled that this song was a bit of a knock off of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give it Up" and Thicke got in some trouble for this. Karma was at work with the lyrics on this one!
#5 - The Newbeats - Bread and Butter
This is probably one of the simplest songs that has ever become famous. The tune is very repetitive and is essentially the exact same on repeat for the entirety of the song. And it's not even a good tune at that! To make matters worse, there is a grating and shrill singer who is featured in the already monotonous song. It's quite surprising that it made the number two hit list in the US.
As a result of this song's success, the Newbeats were able to go on a world tour with the Rolling Stones. That is very impressive for a song that is about bread, butter, and jam!
#4 - Sisqo - Thong Song
Judging just by the name of this song, even if you never heard it and the lyrics, you could probably guess why it was included on this list and among the top five most annoying songs. Unless you are from Australia where thongs are another word for sandals or flip flops, then you will definitely understand how this inappropriate song could get on someone's nerves. Sisqo did not shy away from this topic at all!
He was not ashamed to sing about thongs and even made a point to repeat the word multiple times in a row in the song, making for the most annoying chorus.
#3 - Aqua - Barbie Girl
If you are just hearing of the song Barbie Girl for the first time you might be fooled into thinking that it is a promotional jingle for the world famous Barbie Dolls. However, that could not be farther from the case, and the more you listen to the song and its words, the more you understand that no company would write lyrics like those to promote a children's toy.
Barbie actually sued Aqua on account of Barbie. Not because the song was annoying and doomed to get stuck in your head though, as you might have been led to believe!
#2 - The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Coming in at number two on the list of pop music's most annoying songs you have the one and only...500 Miles. Although the song itself is actually called I'm Gonna Be, it is better known as 500 Miles...for obvious reasons. Who has been caught on a hiking trip with someone who would not stop singing this song? Did you learn to hate hiking as a result of the incessant singing?
The song had decent potential but there is something about the tone and the repetitiveness of the tune that makes it grating and difficult to even listen to more than once. It feels like a song that never ends.
#1 - Unknown Artist - Baby Shark Dance
If there is one song that just about every person in this world knows, it is Baby Shark. If you so much as say the words "baby shark" out loud, there is almost no chance that the tune will not pop immediately into your head. Originating in the 2010s, it is not fully known who wrote this song and what the origins of it are. What is known is that it became famous in kindergartens and for kids (and adults) around the world.
There is a reason this song is so catchy and that is partially because it is so annoying. And it is so annoying because it is so catchy!
