Sure, we like our TV shows to have interesting plots and loveable characters, but if they can also include some stellar outfits, chances are we’ll only get more hooked. Whether its period drama that feature new versions of classic styles, or modern stories that include some sophisticated looks, sometimes it’s just fun to watch TV for the great fashion inspiration. Check us these 9 shows whose fashion is worth tuning in for:
1. Sex and the City
This show first aired over 20 years ago, but it still influences the way we talk – and dress. Through SATC’s six seasons Carrie Bradshaw proved that she can pull of any look (tutu and hills? 80s headscarves? Wearing lingerie in public? they were all bad on paper and amazing on screen),
and she and the gang turned couture designers like Manolo Blahnik, Dior and Chanel to household names.
2. That 70s Show
The show that launched the careers of Ashton Kutcherr and Mila Kunis also gave us some great retro fashion and nostalgia-inducing outfits, that made us wish we were born in the 70s.
The style icon of the show was no doubt Jackie Burkhart (Kunis), who sports some incredible ensembles composed of high-waisted jeans, crop tops, clogs and hoop earrings.
3. Mad Men
Mad Men is considered to be one of the greatest shows in the current ‘golden age’ of television. Together with the impeccable writing and production, the show exceled in its glamorous portrayal of the advertising world in 1960s NY – and the decade’s glorious fashion.
Tailored suits, flowy dresses, gorgeous accessories – this show’s got it all.
4. Big Little Lies
This whodunnit story also featured some intriguing fashion. The show tells the story of five very different women, and accordingly each of the characters’ personality is represented by a very unique, yet stylish wardrobe.
Season 2 saw some major transition in their women's lives, and the emotional turmoil were also impressively represented in the show’s costume design.
5. Peaky Blinders
The British period crime drama is based on a real-life gang that was ruling in the streets of Birmingham in the beginning of the 20th century, and its fashion is inspired by the Roaring Twenties, in addition to the 'uniform' of the real gang members.
Long coats, tailored suits, flat caps, solid boots – all super stylish look that could also work in the 2020s world.
6. The Good Wife
The Good Wife was an explicitly feminist show, and as such it also gave a lot of respect to the business chic wardrobe of its female characters. Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) has gone through many changes over the show’s seven seasons, and they have been reflected in her wardrobe –
from basic, appropriate office wear (the ‘good wife’ wardrobe), to bigger and bolder power-dressing (of a woman who's much more than just a good wife).
7. Hollywood
Ryan Murphy’s shows all feature immaculate costume design, that vividly brings back whatever decade the story is set in. Murphy has called Hollywood a "love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown”, and it is also a love letter to its fashion -
a celebration of 'old Hollywood' glamour, which still influences the runways and red carpets we see today.
8. Downton Abbey
Whatever the aristocratic Crawley family is going through, it always does it in amazing fashion. The hit period drama followed the family between the years1912 and 1926, and showed the transition of fashion from Edwardian style to flapper dresses, the influence of WW1 on the fashion industry, and the dawning of a new era of modernity –
and it's managed to be both stylish and smart in the way it portrayed the passage of time.
9. Selling Sunset
Selling Sunset is the perfect escapist show for when you went to transport yourself from the world of Covid to a world of luxury and style. All cast members are extremely attractive and they all dress to the nines, no matter if they’re trying to sell a house or out clubbing in Hollywood.
We are especially obsessed with realtor Christine Quinn and her over the top, colorful wardrobe.
